When Lawyers Attack: Clinton's Lewinsky Lawyer (Lanny Davis) Teams Up With Right-Wing Republicans to push AB 1991

For those who remain in the dark, the City Council's lead attorney for the Beachwood scam...er settlement deal...is none other than celebrity attorney Lanny Davis. Some may remember that Lanny Davis was the point man for President Bill Clinton's now pathetic-looking attempt to avoid admitting to the infamous Monica Lewisnky affair.

Rewind to 10 years ago:

Web Link

"Lewinsky testified presidential secretary Betty Currie contacted her about picking up gifts the president had given her. Was that on the president's orders? The president's team points out Currie testified it was Lewinsky who initiated the contact. `Curry says that she went to retrieve those gifts at Ms. Lewinsky's suggestion,' said Lanny Davis, former special White House counsel. `Apparently Ms. Lewinsky has a different recollection. At best that is in dispute.'"

Are you kidding me? We have a Lewinsky-era lawyer working for Half Moon Bay? How much are we paying this guy and his many hired professional lobbyists? This looks very sleazy.

And it gets sleazier. As I have posted before, Chop Keenan, who will be the benefactor of Davis' lobbying efforts if AB 1991 ever succeeds, is on the Board of Overseers of the right-wing Hoover Institution, whose current fellows include Newt Gingrich and Donald Rumsfeld. Yes, you read that correctly.

Who would have thought that our little pumpkin town would become ground zero for a stealthy anti-environmental power play led by both Clinton- and Reagan-istas?

Comments

Who would have thought that Mike Ferreira could create a mess of this magnitude !

Naomi Patridge is even more to blame for this mess.

Hallelujah!

We are SAVED!

Our scandal is small potatoes compared to Clinton’s scandals.

He saved Bill, He can save us!

Yes but remember Bill's legal bills added up to the tens of millions. That's where we are headed with these high priced lobbyists.

Yeah, but our bill won't add up to 23 million dollars, the difference of 41m-18m.

I'm feeling the love right now. how about you?

We will spend millions on legal fees and lobbyists and then still end up owing $18 million. Not something to rejoice about.

The 18m is paid if Chop does not get the property. If those people would not interfere with our bitniz we wouldn't have to pay lobbists all that $$.

If we pay the 18m and get the land, what will be done with it? Most likely nothing. It will still be a lot full of weeds sitting between existing developments next to a highway. what does that say about hmb?

and then we want to charge visitors more for to spend hard earned cash to stay in our hotels to look at the weed lot. would you do that?

The lead attorney is still John Knox of Orrick, if you google Lanny Davis you see he works for Orrick as a lobbyist.

Good for HMB City Council for to stop fooling around with local lawyers Meyers Nave who were apparently way out of the league with the handling of this lawsuit. They lost the 41 million dollar judgement against the City. They were cheap at 300 bucks an hour, but look what the City gets for that price. Pay more and get the job done.

SB and everyone else who is complaining better get on board and support the legislation otherwise we will have to pay the 18 million. Instead of sqauking, go out and get your fake eviromentalists friends to raise the funds otherwise sit back down in your huddled group.

Negotiating away such a fundamental public right as our right to appeal, and the City’s most legitimate point of leverage, indicates that the City was excessively accommodating. Frankly, my dear, it stinks!

Yes, John Knox is lead attorney for us.

Lanny Davis is an Orrick partner at the dc office.

Audubon are you nuts? The city didn't have a chance with appealing, it was a crapshoot. So they decided not to waste any more time and money. They had an opportunity to get the judgement reduced to less than half and found another way not to pay anything. In fact make 2.5 million dollars on the deal. I give them credit for enduring all this grief that they did not set in motion.

If all of you so called friends of the earth really thought there was a chance on continuing with appeals and that BS of going to the Supreme court, where was the money to help fund prolonging this mess? Sierra Club and green foothills seem to have all the lawyers and lobbysits now to interfere and screw up HMB. You and your outsider friends can stop crying foul because you did nothing to help Half Moon Bay.

This is part of a posting I just wrote on the topic Selling Property to Pay Off Debt. We need to generate grassroots support and show Assemblyman Mullin we back him up.

Let’s work on getting AB1991 passed. Show your support in writing. Time is of the essence. If you can do it today, please do. Ask your friends and neighbors to send a letter urging support, too. Here is contact information for Assemblyman Mullin.

Gene Mullin, California State Assembly, State Capitol, Room 2116, Sacramento, CA 94249-0019, Fax: 916-319-2119

AB 1991 reeks of corrupt political backroom dealing. Tell Gene Mullin to stop playing God and follow the laws.

I will be writing Mullin a letter that the raping of the CA coast will be his legacy if he keeps promoting this.

Like it or not, we now have two choices:

1) Pass AB1991

or

2) Pay $18 Million, plus 6%

Which do you prefer? Now remember, before you answer in haste, if #1 doesn't suit your fancy, please make your checks payable to The City Of Half Moon Bay, and the sooner you can get those checks in, the better.

Thank you

AB 1991 won't pass, so you're going to be stuck with #2 regardless.

No matter if it is Door #1 or Door #2, the City needs to sell property to take care of business. Times are tight, Even without Beachwood, bills are coming due, cash is king.

If HMB were a bank, or credit union, or a Special District, or any other municipality, or a Pizzeria...it is time to re-structure your business, re-assess your assets, and liabilities and re-think who you are. Re-think what Must be Done.

As the Boy Scouts say, Be prepared.

Think of all the needs and people and children in our little town, the ones that have to pay the bills--Please don't leave them more of a mess than you have to.

Well, Betcha, if that's what you really believe (or hope for), then don't waste your time 'betting' me. Since you can apparently afford that bet (I can't), just get the $18 million Cashier's Cheque made payable to The City of Half Moon Bay, and deliver it to the Council, in front of God and everyone, at the next Council meeting (05-06-08).

Your generousity will be recorded on video, and much appreciated, for all time.

Besides dozens of inflammatory rants, what bit of generosity has George ever offered the council?

The incompetents who made the settlement should pay for the settlement. What kind of fool believes those who were not party to the giveaway to the developer, who makes out with either #1 or #2 in Lord George's options, should be responsible for paying for a stupid deal?

It's pretty simple and straight forward. I agree that the ones responsible should pay. According to Judge Walker, the 2000 HMB City Council is responsible. Who am I to argue with a Federal Judge.

That means they should pay. That group was dominated by our favorite No Growth bunch, so cough it up guys.

This Council reduced the $42 Million Judgment to $18 Million. That's a 67% reduction in exposure. Pretty good, if you ask me. Moreover, if AB1991 passes, and Keenan can finally do what he's been trying to do for 15 years, we get $2.25 Million from him. That's right; he'll pay us to do (for once) what we say we'll do.

When was the last time anyone heard of an award winner paying the loser as a condition of settlement? I've never seen that before. Perhaps others have.

By the way, I'm feelin the love guys. Thanks

George's largess said: “what bit of generosity has George ever offered the council?” OMG--Where have you been? George and his family love Half Moon Bay; they have a very long history here. Did you not read the eloquent letter he sent to Mullin? Have you not read his postings regarding our quagmire? George faithfully attends council meetings, he provides insightful commentary, and he is very well respected in this community.

NP: Your ignorance is showing. Again.

Again, please send letters supporting passage of AB1991 to Assemblymember Mullin, via fax: 916-319-2119 by Friday 4:00. Thanks!

"I agree that the ones responsible should pay. According to Judge Walker, the 2000 HMB City Council is responsible. Who am I to argue with a Federal Judge."

Well no one, Lord George, if you are a fellow right-wing property rights extremist. But to try to get people to believe there is some objective truth in Walker's decision? Spin, spin, spin.

Note that part of the deal the bumblers on the city council agreed to was the dropping of the appeal. Now why would that be a part of the deal if Walker's decision was so secure and proper?

You will have to try to do better than repeatedly quote yourself on matters where you have already been shot down or on the kind of judicial decision that is regularly lost on appeal. Ask the losers in your favorite law group in Sacramento if you are under the impression Walker's position is one that prevails in the courts.

I have seen your postings for a couple of weeks now, now pitching. You're all over the place, in terms of location, trying hard to get attention.

I have yet to see you present ANY factual data regarding the Beachwood matter, or any other matter. You are full of vitriol, rhetoric, and .. well.. It's a four letter word so I won't say it.

All we've seen from you are personal attacks that have no merit, are factually baseless, and frankly make you look even more rediculous than you probably are.

And here I'm writting something, wasting my time, to someone who can't even put their name to their comments, that has no interest in problem solving, but prefers problem making and stirring. Absurd.

Until and unless you have something of merit, and you haven't shown that to date, just let Mommy and Daddy talk and you go play with your swing.

NP, I know you weren't asking me, but I'm just curious. What is a 'law group'?

NP,

Several things are going on here.

You either have no understanding of the import of the Yamagiwa decision, or did not read the Beachwood Settlement Agreement, or did not understand the conference call today, or the press release, or, Most Probably, are simply an agent provocateur.

NP, do you work for the Coastal Commission? Any comments on all those "misrepresentations" by our very own Coastal Commission.

I find this interaction between the City of HMB with the Coastal Commission to be very damning to the credibility of said Commission. I do not know if it is "Staffers Gone Wild!" or "Commissioners asleep at the Switch" or "Time for Peter Douglas to retire..."

Re: Thank you for help in passing AB1991

Dear Assemblymember Mullin,

My home is at the corner of Terrace and Golden Gate Avenues in Half Moon Bay,next door to the Beachwood/Glencree subdivisions.

The construction of 129 homes will be noticed and heard. However, the public safety issues that it will resolve( including those noted by officer A.J. Johnson concerning layoffs/response times if AB 1991 does not pass) include the safety of 400 families in the three subdivisions linked by Golden Gate Avenue. We would have a traffic light controlled intersection at Beachwood and Highway 1. In addition, it would provide the permanent safe entry requested by the Coastal Commission into the proposed 63 homes of the Pacific Ridge development and to the Girls and Boys Club building site on the west side of Highway 1.

With that said, I have reviewed the approved “vesting tentative maps” for Beachwood and Glencree and as a licensed civil engineer, I might have suggested some “tweaking”. However, that is not possible now because of the pattern of actions by previous city officials to stop/minimize growth by any means. Fortunately the voters of HMB have “de-coupled” them from office.

As an environmentally concerned resident of Half Moon Bay (i.e. a 70 year old human being) , I appreciate your sponsoring AB1991 and working to have it passed.

With Warmest Regards,

Jerry and Barbara Steinberg

If the City is going to spend millions to get support for AB1991 and environmental groups are going to spend millions to fight it, why don't we pool the money, pay off the 18mill (or certainly reduce it substantially) and move on with our lives.

The City would be saved. The no-growthers could relish in saving the wetlands. Chop would get his money. Sounds like a win/win/win situation.

For all those eliciting monies, or wishing to "pool" monies in support of HMB to help our community, here is a status report--

I think we all know the address of City Hall, and so far they have received ---Zilch..from Sierra Club, from Coastal Commission, from Green Foothills, from San Mateo County,...

People, we are all by ourselves.

So much for wishing.

InTheKnow, how much money can you identify, how much do you Have? Have you ever done any fundraising? Want to start?

"And here I'm writting something, wasting my time, to someone who can't even put their name to their comments, that has no interest in problem solving, but prefers problem making and stirring. Absurd."

Thanks, Lord George, interpreter of life, final arbiter of all disagreement. Unfortunately, nobody except your usual unoriginal yes people seemed to notice besides me.

One little problem. Criticism coming from you is taken as praise, as you are so transparently off base in all that you assert and spin. So all that happens with your meaningless repetitions, your groundless assertions (because you never tell the whole story, only bits you can cobble together to create your fiction), and your silly right-wing political pushing that could have no effect except on the most incompetent and insecure public officials is that your Disciple and sycophants dutifully line up and bow before your babble. No one else is persuaded. The demonized Mike F. would still get more votes than you if an election were held today.

Yet you're cool. Because as locals go, you are one entertaining piece of work. Without you and your lineup of anti-environment foils, there would be far fewer illustrations of backward, money-grubbing poseurs trying to manipulate HMB to the detriment of all but those financially interested in cramming in even more development than the clogged up town can stand.

I look forward to your next vacuous piece quoting yourself as if you amount to anything worthy of consideration.

Thank you Jerry,

I think you have given me a new insight as to why people that live on Terrace may actually support this settlement.

I stand corrected.

The above poster is trying to mislead you good people. Jerry is misinformed. This settlement scam will degrade his quality of life.

Now Pitching, Well you sure hit that one out of the Ballpark! Its about time Credulous George the local yokal, towns bully/blowhard got rumbled.

Sweet!

But George ! You told me you wouldn't !!

Check out page 2 of this link:

OMG! Is this our own gentile Madam Mayor talking? I don't think so. Sounds more like a lawyer who is comfortable fighting it out in the gutter, where fluids of who knows who are flowing, possibly staining blue dresses, etc.

Lanny Davis as lead lobbyist for the Half Moon Bay City Council. Brings to mind Elvis Presley singing at a bowling alley lounge towards the end of his career.

Way to go, Lanny!

Its a shame the way the town has changed........

We all use to have such a good hard working image

Now we are looking like a cheap Lawyers, suit.

Thanks Old Guard.for your heritage

Carry on

Gotta love the LCP zealots cheering the downfall of HMB. How is it that a handfull, led by Mike, can bring an entire town to its knees.

Stop and think for just one minute. Is there any doubt what this City would be doing if Mike were in charge? Appeal, Appeal, Appeal, til we were bankrupt.

Is it any wonder that Mike is leading the charge to defeat the Settlement Agreement?

Stop and think one more minute, IF I got something wrong or you have more information, Please Provide Same.

Actually np, your disgusting. I'd hope Clay pulls your comment and your IP, for good. It's time for you to go back to coastsider.

"Actually np, your disgusting. I'd hope Clay pulls your comment and your IP, for good. It's time for you to go back to coastsider.

SOS, a resident of Half Moon Bay, 1 minutes ago"

Right. We wouldn't want to divert anyone from your sycophantic spew.

Clay, why did you delete my posts? You keep posts suggesting sexual acts and you delete mine?

Try this. Go to Google and type in "Lanny Davis Spinmeister"

You won't believe how many articles come up. The guy makes a living spewing out nasty attacks and distortions. If you want to hear some, click on the link below for the MP3 recording courtesy of Coastsider.com

Good question glad I don't know ...

Maybe it was because he couldn't see the X Rated post of np, as his eyes were just overloaded with the excrement thrown around on all the blogs. Can't impress with intelligence, dazzle with bs. You know how it goes.

Missed one Clay. This is still an open forum. Kids look at this and participate too. Can't we at least keep the X Rated stuff out of here? and 86 the IP that's spewing it? You've certainly pulled much more benign stuff. His is pure trash.

Just goes to show who we're dealing with. Problem is it could be your neighbor.

And now somebody just emailed me that Lanny Davis was recently caught bullying a former Miss America. This guy one nasty s.o.b.!

No wonder the Old Guard hired him. He probably clicked right away with the Smiling Assassin.

SOS, imoan. moan on.

Are you the one np saw above, on your knees for George. I'm sure he didn't mean to inturrupt. Don't stop now.

Keep up the good bs. You know what I always say.

SOS, Same Old S***, imoan.

IMOAN. Why do youy HATE Half Moon Bay?????????? be part of the solution, not the problem......

Ted, I don't hate Half Moon Bay. I love this place and I am trying to protect it. The only ones anybody should hate are the corrupt politicians and their greedy friends who are trying to rape this place for their own gain. They need to be stopped.

Then why hasn't anyone done something about Mike F. and Jim G. and his friends???? They all made $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on this City???

Ted you need to look at the Old Guard. How much money has been made by their friends over the last 30 years? All those City public works contracts that got steered to local pavers or builders, even though they were not the low bidder. I have checked it out. The Old Guard is rotten to the core.

Imoan. Who is the "old guard" you are referring to? If you have proof, then come forward. If so, I put the "other two" on the same list.

Imoan, now pitching, oh whatever me, and that group will not come forward. they only speak from the cover of the curtain. they are cowards.

For starters, the Old Guard would include Patridge, Muller, Mullin, Fraser, Mickelsen, McClung, Nerhan, Muteff and their associated cronies. My apologies if I forgot anybody.

Agian, imoan, you are incorrect; although at least this time you're actually attempting to provide data (a good thing).

The 'Old Guard' you refer to was centered around The God Mother. I, for one, was not one of those people. Delores never called on me, and I never called on her, although we knew each other and talked. So, your list is innacurate. I might offer a suggestion to you here; categorizing people might be a little more difficult than you think. Just because someone has lived here 10, 20, 30 years or all their lives does not determine who they hung out with nor their political affiliations.

Plus, the 'Old Guard' you refer to was not a membership group, a political action committee (PAC), or any other type of organization.

As an example: Betty Stone, Delores's protege, would certainly be considered by all to have been 'Old Guard', yet in my opinion, and as it turned out, was just the opposite. In fact, Betty had a lot to do with the proliferation of the current league for coastside protection (lcp), a PAC, among other things.

I won't speak to the other names you've posted. They can all speak for themselves. As far as I'm concerned however, I have never considered myself 'Old Guard', just as I've never considered myself 'New Guard' which most people would relate as the opposite of 'Old Guard' (example: lcp).

From my view, I've either tried to stay out of most local politics (and managed to have some success there, until recently), or get after the people that in my opinion are severely hurting us. The lcp, a PAC, is hurting people, and has for 15 years. Evidence our current quagmire; $41 Million Judgment, and the resulting Settlement. This is but one of the many examples, from my view. The illegal 'park' purchase would be another. I could fill cyberspace with more, but those two are a good start.

So, imoan, perhaps you shouldn't be so quick to label. That is, of course, unless you are deliberately trying to be shallow and attempting to play on people's emotions to make a horribly critical situation even worse.

But, what do I know? I've only been here 30 years, married a local, raised two fifth generation boys here, and been an active community member trying to make things here right; and using mt name in the process.

Correction: I mispelled 'my' in the last sentence. It should read: "....; and using 'my' name in the process".

And, by more than coincidence, a subtle reminder to you, imoan, that credibility is supported when we're not hiding in the shadows behind an anonymous keyboard throwing out unfounded scribes.

I hope I've been helpful. If one is going to attempt to draw on our history to come to current conclusions, perhaps one should have a reasonable knowledge of our history. Unfortunately imoan, you don't appear to have that knowledge; not first hand (as I do), nor are you accepting the correct data second or third hand.

I'm going to hate myself for this, but as one poster continually suggests (with more than a bit of arrogance and ignorance); do the research.

George hit the nail on the Imoan head when you said "That is, of course, unless you are deliberately trying to be shallow and attempting to play on people's emotions to make a horribly critical situation even worse."

I might add a little regarding the 'Old Guard' here.

The 'Old Guard' was old school. They didn't try to hurt people. Delores was very much into Ag. She tried to run the City correctly, and was beloved by most, if not all. One drawndown, in my opinion, was that although the 'Old Guard' didn't try to hurt people, they did exclude some. The circle was well populated and recognizable. If you were not in 'the circle', you just weren't a mover shaker. They did get things done.

Delores, God rest her soul, was an iron fisted woman that knew what she wanted, and knew how to get things done. It seemed there was no limit to the people she knew. All it generally took was one phone call from her, whether locally, or at the State level, and problem solved.

She was was a King maker, with the sole goal of making this town a good place to live. She always had the best intentions.

Wow. Sounds like Lenny Roberts on a smaller scale.

No, Teacher, not even close. Delores did what she did out of love and backbone.

Roberts does what she does for money. All else, regarding Roberts, is superfluous.

There is a huge difference between involvement in something, as a citizen, and the same for pay. Roberts was collecting in excess of $80K p/yr in the 80's.

No, two altogether different people fighting for different reasons.

George. I agree Roberts is out for herself.

Cindee, I think you nailed it.

I might make a suggestion to those that don't have a clue (like np). As I stated on another post, pay attention np, you might just learn something. The history I've offered here only scratches the serface, but is valuable. Unless present at the time, it can be hard to understand. Small towns have their own character. HMB is no different in that regard.

Although we're all proud of you for learning a new word, sycophant, and a few different ways to use it, np, you really do need to grow at a faster rate or you'll continue to bring up the rear, and we all know how smelly it can be back there. Pay attention, grasp the subject matter, and get up to speed; or you'll stay lost.

George,

It could possibly be that NP likes the rear, and the view, and the smell. Some people lead, some follow, some are lost forever. Some like to stand at the top of the escalator, have a conference, and block others passage. Sound familiar? Possibly an agent provocateur?

Time for the City to move on, lots of business before this town, may not be enough time left to educate the foot draggers.

now pitching. george at least does his research. funny, people get censored for calling people "rude", but not for behaving rudely.

I like the view of some rears.

Sycophant, is that you Now Pitching/Imoan/OSM? Is Sycophant your new ID since you exposed yourself on the Development and Litigation History of the AB 1991 Properties thread?

Sam,

Check out my spelling. Check out my grammar. I assure you I am the one and only poster. Yes, I like the rear view, as most male bloggers do.

Most male bloggers like the rear vier of women. You Sam, on the other hand, prefer men's.

Your spelling is fine, just like OSM's when he wants it to be, and the other two mentioned. If you're not np, as you imply, she's going to be pissed. You stole her word of the month. Now she'll have to go find a new one.

Sam, I owe you an apology. I meant to direct my comment above to Sycophant, not you. I was looking at Sycophant's post and typed in Sam instead of who I meant ... Sycophant.

It should read "You Sycophant, on the other hand, prefer men's."

Please accept my apologies. You have been on target all along.

No problem, SOS.

I am a woman, so yeah SOS you're right. That said men seem to like rears (looking and touching) much more than women

I'll take your word for it, Sycophant. Beauty is in the eyes, or hands, of the beholder, I guess.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

"Roberts does what she does for money. All else, regarding Roberts, is superfluous.

There is a huge difference between involvement in something, as a citizen, and the same for pay. Roberts was collecting in excess of $80K p/yr in the 80's."

Collecting from what, Lord George? CGF? Firing off in every direction, trying to hit something? Oops, looks like a dog got in the way of a bullet.

But back to business. Where do you claim Roberts was getting her 80K per annum? I feel a lucrative bet coming on if I can pin you down on this one.

Or maybe ethics would prevent me from collecting? Your record for accuracy makes you such an easy target. Some would say it is not right to take candy from a spoiled baby.

There you go again, np.

Do you have ANY constructive data on this topic that you can provide?

"There you go again, np.

Do you have ANY constructive data on this topic that you can provide?

Bill, a resident of Half Moon Bay, 6 minutes ago"

Hey, Billy, good for you. Nothing of substance, but you found another thread.

Now Billy, if you think you know where your Lord George got that claim for Roberts's income, you are as free as anyone to put it up on the board. But I won't bet you. No question that would be unethical. Nothing against you just because you don't have a mind of your own.

There you go again, np.

Do you have ANY constructive data on this topic that you can provide?

Geez, the Old Guard is really scraping the bottom if you know who is the best they've got. And Dolores Mullin was not in the leat good intentioned. That's spin out of the Lanny Davis playbook.
